My Favourite Childhood Books

I remember... a book about a caterpillar and his best friend, also a caterpillar. Both of them dream of the day they become butterflies, but when the time comes, one becomes a butterfly, and the other a moth who's banished. So the butterfly goes looking for her.  Oo, I remember the title now. "Once Upon a Garden Hose"

I remember... a book about a chubby little horse like a precursor to My Little Pony where I loved the illustrations. Hey, just remembered that one too. "Synchronicity"

I remember.... "Where the Wild Things Are"

I remember... "King of the Wind" about the Godolphin Arabian, who was the father of almost all racing horses and the mute slave boy who loved him.

I remember... "Black Beauty" and that sweet horse in it.

I remember... "The Magician's Apprentice" and especially the wood between the worlds.

  1. I inhaled the horse stories as a child, and loved all of the Narnia books.

There were more books that I remember fondly. One was about a little girl who's grandmother/aunt/guardian was a good witch who turned bad due to a spell error and the little girl convinced a unicorn to help fix her. The kid even had a little lady bug as a pet.

There were a couple other unicorn picture books, one was a Unicorn who had to find his horn, the other animals in the herd laughed at him. Another was of a foal who went adventuring and ended up breaking his leg but was saved by magic and turned into a unicorn. (can you sense a theme?)

I loved The Giver, and trying to imagine seeing the color red for the first time, or feeling snow flakes on my cheeks without ever having known it before.

I remember wishing I could be like the children in "From The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler" and live in a museum and take baths in the fountain while hiding from security guards.

    1. I haven't heard of any of those ones. I'd have been all over a unicorn book too. :p

  2. I have been an avid reader since...forever, but I can't remember the real early books. You mentioned King of the Wind, and I immediately perked up. Remember camel's milk had to be substituted for horse milk? Reading it was great, but oh, the illustrations made it better. And then there's The Box-Car Children, The Black Stallion series, The Hobbit was read to my 6th grade class) and that launched me into the Lord of the Ring, and 7th grade was the year of Watership Down. I may have taken this too far. I'm pretty sure 7th graders all agree that they're not "children" anymore. :-)

    1. Oh, yes! I still have hardcover, illustrated edition of The King of the Wind. I read a lot of The Black Stallion books too. Until I discovered fantasy, I was all over the horse books.

I still read Watership Down and The Lord of the Rings.

  3. Raymond Feist, yes? I loved his books. :)
My favorite ones were Dragonlance and those by David Eddings, with a little dabbling into the Stone Age with Jean M. Auel. :)

    1. One of my all time favourite Raymond Feist books is Faerie Tale. I love that book.

I've read David Eddings' series several times and I do remember reading the Dragonlance books many years ago.

I also recall reading the Jean M Auel books and being terrified someone would catch me reading the sex scenes....
